Outside The Box

Outside The Box

In this module, we were pushed to think beyond the obvious and explore how design can communicate through metaphor and abstract ideas. It wasn’t just about making something look good—it was about finding deeper meaning and expressing it visually. We started by brainstorming everyday concepts and emotions, then had to translate them into unexpected graphic forms. One of my favourite exercises was choosing a word and designing around it without ever showing it directly. I picked “pressure” and used tight grids, overlapping elements, and heavy colour blocks to evoke the feeling instead of spelling it out. It really challenged me to move away from literal thinking and trust the power of visual suggestion. This module reminded me that strong design often lies in what’s implied rather than what’s shown.
